They are quite regularly seen, more so then one would think around PTA :D Still a special bird to seen in a built up area!

They are common in PTA and I have also seen a Yellow-Billed Hornbill in PTA earlier this year.

The Red-Billed variety can be found just outside Pretoria towards the north.

I still mostly have MOSSIES, weavers, bulbuls and two unkown birds.
Oh at least I have Cape Robin Chats...

Ne need, Yolandé.
I've seen them at WSBG on occasion, good reason to spend more time there.

Ooooh, have I got a treat in store for you Grey hornbill fans!!

Eduard Winter, a friend of mine that stays in Pta has just had a grey hornbill breed successfully in a nestbox in his garden. I'm uploading the pix he sent me now-now.

Justin, my friend is seriously aware of the dos and do nots of nature. Minimal disturbance is the key to having grey hornbills breed in your yard. Eduard set up a camera and operated it remotely to get these shots.

In nature the grey hornbill nests in an existing hole in a tree trunk. They may enlarge it a bit. The female then plasters herself in while brooding. The male feeds her during that period while she lays eggs and sits on them until they hatch. When the eggs hatch, she breaks out to help with the feeding. The chicks in turn attempts to close up the hole. Eventually when they are ready, they break out and escape into the wide, wonderful world they have been glimpsing through that little nest aperture since coming out of the egg.

That process is as strenuous as a birthing!

And how would you know?

Animals, Yolandé Oelsen. The birthing of animals is what I refered to. Humans have it (generally) much more difficult, anycase - the few that I have seen have had a tough old time...

Clutch size can be as large as 5. I'll find out from Eduard what the clutch size was with his birds.

BTW, he says that the nest was originally excavated by a collared barbet and subsequently also nested in by a crested barbet!! I have four nest boxes hung in various places in my garden (that look soooo enticing...) and I yet have to get any bird to show interest :hmz:

A friend of mine has a pair of Grey Hornbills living in her garden in Sunninghill, Johannesburg! I couldn't believe it! They have a Pecan Nut tree and the hornbills seem to love the nuts!
