Like I said, Funky, the more pricey tents, like no 40 have their own loo, kitchen, cutlery etc. Orpen is 3 km away and has a swimming pool, petrol station, shop where you can buy braai wood, but if you are already in the park I would suggest you pick up your purchases at another camp, then you know you have it.

BTW, those who have stayed in no 40 rave about it. It is in the corner, so you pick up more travellers along the fences.
Watch out for the resident honey badger and African wild cat at night and whatever you do, don't confront the badger. They are more ferocious than Peter Schmeichel!!

There are actually 10, Boulder, #31-40. Number 40 is at the very end, with fence along both the front (river) and the side, so most feel this is the prime+ location. However, #39 is also very nice, and from pix it looks like #38 is also great. Indeed, I expect you won't go wrong with any of them. You need to call or email Orpen to put in your request. Rules for how far in advance they will accept requents seem to vary among camps, so I'd suggest that you try now ... at worst, they'll tell you to call again closer to your dates  Whichever tent you get, I think you already know that Tamboti is utter heaven!

Rosemary,

There is a fence between 30, the last standard tent, and 31 the first luxury one.

Boulder, they only allocate the numbers about a week in advance, so an email to camp manager Rosinah thereabout would be the best.

There is a path on the inside of the fence which can be walked & at night with a powerful torch.

Out of my own experience i have stayed at Tamboti many times, and find that each tent bring's us a diffrent experience and feeling.

Our best tent is number 2 or 22.

Enjoy it cause we always do.

A few years ago i decided to spend my last night here. When i arrived the river was bone dry. I had a braai and went to sleep.

I awoke early the following morning to the sound of running water snakeing its way towards the sea over the dry and dusty riverbed. What made it even more special was that the weather was 100% clear. It must have rained a fair amount inland on the escarpment. It began as a trickle and ended up a strong torrent.

A magnificent moment that filled all my senses.... it will never be forgotten......

We tried to book three nights in May , but just managed to get 1 single night.
But hey, that's better than no night at Tamboti
(And even better we are there to celebrate a birthday)

Tamboti is magic.

We stayed there during our last stay. And it was brilliant. we always used to stay in bungalows or huts. This was our first time in a tent in Kruger. It was number 40 right at the fence. And it was just a breathtaking feeling. You could hear every single movement in the bush. AWESOME!
We had a rather sleepless first night  , but we loved it.

Finally got round to posting some pics of our tent at Tamboti.

We had no 36 - one of the luxury ones. The views aren't too bad but you only really get one view of the river bed because of the trees. However you do get very good views of the hornbills!

So this is no. 36

This is the view looking east towards No 40 (no idea if it's up stream or downstream)

Image

The view the other way was totally blocked by trees and bushes. A bit frustrating on the viewing side but brilliant for keeping the feeling of isolation from the other tents.

The resident family:

And another view of the riverbed:

I must say that having a shower and looking up to see the sky is quite an amazing experience, although the floor does get a bit slippery when it rains.

Do watch out for the little critters. We left out an unopened bag of rice one night and the next day it had been kindly ventilated for us. Vegetable curry doesn't taste quite right with pasta instead of rice!

And be very careful of the baboons - on our last morning we came back to do a final check and found one raiding the dustbin. Luckily he was more scared of us than we were of him and scarpered.

Just how careful should you be of the Baboons. Are they present in the camp all the time. We are planning a trip to Kruger in October and could not get a bungalow at Satara for the night I needed. Tamboti looks like it would be a good experience. We will be staying at Crocodile Bridge the first night and Tamboti the second. I have looked at the kilo meter chart between rest camps and it says that it will take 7 hours to get there from Croc Bridge to Orpen. Does anyone know if that is to far to drive in 1 day? Or is that OK. Any information
would be greatly appreciated

First of all, as I mentioned before we had an episode with the baboons at Tamboti, but still loved it! That is a looong drive but not impossible. I usually drive from PKop to Tamboti and it takes appr. the same time. Just get up early, plan your day, make sure you at the picnic spot, other camp, etc at the time you planned and you'll be ok...

We visited Tamboti tented camp a few years ago and it was quite hard to see the dry riverbed from our tent (no.1). Does anyone know of a good tent to book with a better view? The experience was pure magic- can't wait to go again soon.

Yes, cookie, there is a fence. It runs between the tents and the riverbed, then along the end of that section of Tamboti, and along the acess road at the back, making a nicely fenced-in rectangle for the tents. Most of the tents are set high enough so that your view is well over the top of the fence, which is why you may not have noticed it, but it's there. 8)
