This image of the Cape Sparrow (and not Robin ..thnx Scottm) was taken from the See Berg hide in the WNP. There is a huge scruffy nest in the hide and this little guy was adding to the mountain of down with another feather.

1/1250
F/16.0
ISO 3200

It was still early morning and because the bird was close to me, I wanted to make sure I got most of it in focus hence the f/16, which unfortunately drives up the ISO. The canon 500mm I was using has a very shallow Depth of field so its important to remember to adjust your DoF according to your subject. In hindsight I could have reduced the shutter speed to about 1/500 which would have reduced the ISO.

Oh my word, each "bristle" of that feather is so clear!
I hope these photos reach a wider audience.
They are appreciated in the forum but deserve to be viewed more widely.
:great:   :cam:

Next from the West Coast National Park is this Black-headed heron (edit), shot in the last light of the afternoon.
I like this image as it almost seems to be not real. But this is as shot and demonstrates the awesome results you get with good light. Light to me is THE most important aspect of any image. You don't need the best equipment, but you do need decent light.

I can only add to everybody else's "Wow's" Great stuff Touareg and you leave me
But maybe I can grab a few good shots of the birds in Brazil next week (I do mean the feathered ones here  ) which will make you feel just a tad

Do you use mostly manual or av mode when taking bird pics ???

I think your Grey Heron is actually a Black-headed Heron. Stunning photograph as usual.

Thanks for the comments and the correction on the Heron name davejenny. Not sure why I am making so many obvious mistakes

This one I should get right. A purple Heron also from the West Coast National Park's Geelbek hide. I shot this image just as the sun came out and lit up the Heron flying over the water.

Hi Neal

Great photos     .

Enjoying this part of the forum tremendously and learning a lot from the detail you provide. Much more entertaining if one can see how you took the photos (your settings).

Thanks again for providing the extra detail (your settings).

(As ek eendag groot is........)
