seems to be a "hanneton" in French... they are a cycle (round) of 4 years.... here in Switzerland

Sorry don't know what kind of Beetle that is...
We had loads and loads of them in Urikaruus and KTC too.
They are fairly big and it hurts when they hit you

Unfortunately I do not have an Insect book, that is the reason why I do not know this insect as well
Found it on the hide door at Nossob....

Katy, I think it might be the winged (adult?) version of the ant lion — saw lots at night at KTC but never saw one in daylight. I googled and found this pic — seems similar?

Yes this is an Antlion and to narrow it down it is one of the Bark Antlions.

Very difficult to ID this one and the reason for saying so is that we need to catch it and do a scale count on the head and body to be 100% correct.

There are two possibilities and the are:

1. Bibron's burrowing asp (Atractaspis bibronii)
2. Bicoloured quill-snouted snake (X.b. bicolor)

But here we go, the picture you posted is:

Minute to very large insects, usually with strongly hardened bodies

Adults fly at dusk or at night and feed on vegetation. There are 18 similar species in the Genus

More of a 'What is this behaviour' question.
While watching a newborn springbok take her first steps and get her first drink, this springbok got our attention. He rammed the newborn with his horns, and when she was on the ground rammed her again, as well as kicked her. Luckily the mom came to her rescue.



He then turned his attention on a slightly older lamb.









This older lamb managed to find a spot under a low thorn tree, and get away from this springbok.
Is there any explanation for this strange behaviour?

Again we need to have a look at the situation and there are a few questions from my side.

1. Was it the female's baby she treated so harsh?
2. According to the pics it is only a adult female doing the hammering work where is the male?

The adult female might have tried to get the baby on his feet and start running to exercise its legs for a possible chase, they don’t have any mercy in getting their babies to be ready for running away from a predator.
It also might be that the youngster wasn’t her baby.
Clearly it looks like the mother was trying to motivate the youngster to get a move on and start to strengthen its legs.
The questions I start asking Myself now to try and give you an answer is:
1. Did the female doing all the hammering lost her baby and became aggressive towards others?
2. Was it the mother of the baby?
3. What was the overall situation of the herd structure?
We can speculate but to be able to give you the best answer we need to have more detailed information.
