The family of butterflies, Nymphalidae, are also known as "brush-footed butterflies". Why this odd name?

These butterflies are called 'brush footed' because the adults front legs are smaller, and reduced to small brush-like sensory organs, these are not used for walking.

In many of the Nymphalidae species these shortened legs are used to hold down the colourful wings, while resting.

You know, this almost gets me down with these things sometimes. The scientists are forever chopping and changing the classification of things. Sometimes because new info comes to light (good), at other simply because they cannot agree (I guess it needs to be called good too, since at least they're thinking about it. :tongue: ). Just like two kids: "I want it there." "No, it belongs here." "No, there." And so it goes. And where does that leave poor stupid sods like me? :cry:

Bishop, thanks for adding to the answer. :thumbs_up: :clap: You're so right, of course; but I think it is because scientists have many options on how to classify something. Then, after they have chosen one way, enough info pops up to suggest that another option would have been better. And so it goes, chopping and changing, as you say. Makes one wonder how much we actually know about the universe! :roll:

These butterflies are considered the most primitive of butterflies because of their darting flight. Some of them hold their wings flat when settled, like a moth; others lift their wings above their backs, but hold them apart unlike other butterflies. Which species of butterfly am I referring to?

This Southern African butterfly is one of the rarest and most beautiful of the region. It is unusual because it emerges from its chrysalis with one of a large number of different possible wing patterns and colours. This is different from most butterfly species which are identified by a common wing pattern and colour. It gets its name from the fact that it mimics some poisonous species, thereby scaring off predators.
Which butterfly am I speaking about?

OWN, think I finally found it. :mrgreen: Are you speaking about the mocker swallowtails, Princeps dardanus cenea? :huh: Mimics plenty species of the Danainae family.
