I agree with Mattaxel that it is a Jackal buzzard. I see them every day where I live (just moved to the garden route), and what I have noticed, is that the general shape and impression, is that a jackal buzzard has much broader wings than a Steppe or forest buzzard, and in flight, almost gives the impression of a bateleur, with broad wings and a short tail. Once you get used to these subtle differences in shape, it does not matter what colour the bird is, age or moult, the ID is more clear. I think it more difficult to sort out the steppes from the forest buzzards here, where both are found in summer.

Please forgive my ignorance, but it flew past me several times at HIGH speed, so struggled to ID it in first place, is it a Lanner Falcon, or Peregrine Falcon?? Taken at Cibutje Quap in Kgalagadi about a month ago.

I would say that you have photographed a juvenile lanner falcon IN FLIGHT!!!

we've stayed this year in February in Kgalagadi NP. Now I have two raptors, I can't identify.

Never mind the absence and a black chest....this is a juvenile that looks nothing like his parents. The big yellow eye and the bald 'shins' give it away.

Hi, I am not 100% sure, but I think this is a Tawny Eagle.



This photo was taken in November 2012 in the southern parts of the Kruger National Park.

Reasons for Tawny:
* Big and powerful looking Eagle.
* Eye is light brown.
* Mouth ending below the eye.
* Feather colour is Orange - brown.

Hi All raptor experts

A month or 2 ago I was cleaning the swimming pool and a raptor almost landed in the palm tree above me and flew off...I did not get a long enough look at it

last week a raptor app 30 - 45 cm tall landed on a palm tree branch looked into my SO,s eyes realizing she was app 5 meters away, inside, and flew off.

SO described it as being grey with a stomach similar to a Lizard Buzzard (from picture in bird book)
with a black beek.

yesterday in landed and SO managed some cell phone pics. All the birds in the garden, chickens and guinnea fowl were deathly silent whilst it was here.

We live in Riebeek West 30 km east of Malmesbury in the Western Cape







He had a look under the roof where rock pigeons nest.
