Will be visiting Kgalagadi for the first time in May. Staying at Nossob, Gharagab, Bitterpan and Kalahari Tent Camp. What temperatures can we expect at this time of the year? I really know very little about this part of the country and am very excited to expore and find out more. Consequently if you have any additional information, hints and tips that will assist and make our stay memorable please forward to me. From the comments on the forum we are certainly in for a very different experience! Thanks.

Hello neecie,

I'm sure you will love KTP -- it's very different. Your itinerary looks good too -- the Gharagab - Bitterpan leg maybe a bit long, dependingon the roads. I take it you'll be driving a 4X4 ?

The weather should be cool to cold at night and warm during the day -- but this is KTP so anything could happen

You will need to take all your food, water, etc with you too. there is a small shop at Nossob -- just make sure you have cash money in case the line is not working for cr card transactions. And you'll need cash for fuel for the same reason.

Anything else you want to know -- just ask  And enjoy your trip

Hello neecie,

Temperatures at night will be cold and during the day they it will be mostly pleasant but be prepared for very cold at night. The Kgalagadi (KTP) is a wonderful place.

Nossob has a hide from which you will be able to watch animals coming to the waterhole to drink. Many a lion and also cheetah and brown hyena has been seen from the hide.

Gharagab has only 4 units and so a maximum of 8 people at a time. It is very relaxing and again the waterhole can attract all kinds of wonderful visitors

Bitterpan like Gharagab is only accessible to 4 x 4 vehilcles and is also very peaceful. For both Gharagab and Bitterpan you have to carry your own bottled water and firewood or charcoal.

Kalahari Tented camp is delightful and you should see many cheetah driving south from here .

Just fire away any questions and there will be many people here to help you

Hi Neecie and welcome!!!! We have been to KTP twice in May and the days are pleasant (we did have rain last time) and nights can be cold - especially any camps which are under canvas :) our tip is to take some hot chocolate and have it combined with Amarula while settling in to bed .... Sure keeps the cold at bat ;) like Gavin - have a look at both our KTP trip reports for a better idea - see my signature below for the trip report names.

And lastly ..... ENJOY ... It's very different and you can have quiet days with out big cat sightings but when you look back the silence of those days can often be the most special!!! :)

Thanks to everyone for your replies and especially for the trip reports - what wonderful pictures. I am really excited to be going to such a lovely place.
One more question - our friends have a Honda CRV and he is a bit concerned about driving in the park, especially to the tented camp. Can anyone let me know what the roads are like and whether he needs to be concerned at all? Thanks so much for all the info.

He needn't be concerned at all

Roads vary from not bad to very corrugated and can be quite sandy in places, but he should have no problem with a Honda CRV.

Have seen folk in an Atos, a VW Polo, a Ford Focus as well as a couple of Mercedes Sports travelling from TR to Mata Mata
