In Feb this year on the H1-7 below Boyela, we saw a group of 3 Roan keeping company with a biggish herd of Zebra, but they were extremely skittish for some or other reason and as soon as we stopped they bolted across the road and off into the bush at a gallop only stopping some distance away.
Then 3 days later when we came back down again, there were the same 3 almost exactly in the same place and still with their striped friends, but this time on the other side of the road and still just as skittish.
We know they were the same 3 as one of them had a deformed horn.
Will post some pics asap.

Interesting to note that according to the 2009/2010 SANParks Conservation Service report the numbers in Kruger for Roan Antelope were only 90 and for Sable Antelope only 290.

And Lichtenstein Hartebeest only about 50 . You may see them far north too , and we were very priviledged to see a few a couple years ago :)

Stoffel. You talk about Roan down South in 1993. One sighting between Skukuza and Tswokane and the other between Skukuza and Lower Sabie. I would love to hear if this is correct and if somebody have spotted some Roan in the South more recently.

I have seen Eland on the Voortrekker Road (H2-2) near ship montain in 2009, Lichtenstein, Tsesebe and Sable near Pretoriuskop.

During my June trip I saw this Roan antelope on the Tropic of Capricorn loop. When I first spotted him he was in the middle of the road but he disappeared into the thick Mopane bush and this was my best effort. My first digital image of a Roan.

An interesting article on the study of the roan numbers in Kruger and the possible reasons for their decline can be found in our new Science & Research in SANParks forum.

We found one along the Tropic of Capricorn loop last week and two more in the Shingwedzi river bed a day later. Apparently there was a herd of 10 a little further down stream in the Shingwedzi.

I will post some photos over the weekend.

There is a lone roan that frequents Tihongonyeni quite regularly . I have also seen a herd of about 10 near Mooiplaas picnic site .

Saw a herd of 11 Roan on the H1-7 at the Mawawi waterhole on 10 July 2012. What was really nice was that this herd had 4 calves as well. Also at the same waterhole was a Tsessebe and 4 Eland.
First time in 30 years that I was lucky enough to see Roan. :D

Choosing your alias here may have had something to do with it? You suddenly see them... ;)

Wildtuinman, where exactly in the Shingwedzi riverbed did you see them? Always a very special sighting to see a Roan.

SamoesaWoestyn, we saw them very close to the low water bridge at the back gate, they were walking downstream towards Kannidood, perhaps 500m away from camp.

It is already taken if I remember correctly.
Do the nightdrive at Punda, that is where I saw mine.
