Thanks Mant & BGS for the confirming pix and interesting info My mice were seen early morning foraging along the Langebaan road in WCNP.

@BGS: Eish! I should have thought to look at our mammal index. Perhaps you will merge this thread with the earlier one?

After arriving and unpacking we were having a look around the cabin and I heard a scrabbling noise coming from the cupboard we'd put the firelighters and such in. I opened the door and something small scooted away. I was ahunting. Duco joined in and not long after introduced me to our guest - a Four-striped Mouse. The little critter was around all the time we were there. After chewing on the firelighters and dishwashing liquid I was careful not to leave any goodies lying around. He did cause some amusing moments as we often met him coming around a corner.

Note, my current avatar is not the same mouse, but a very far cousin.

dont think there are many others that would have been as accomodating.
but he/she sure is/was a cute mousie.

Spent a night in Grootkolk in October with great hopes for lion sightings, Nary a one but this little chap was a very welcome visitor!

Please will one of the 'mouse fundis' tell me the difference between a striped mouse and a grass mouse? We found the teeniest little mouse in the long grass at the side of the road in KTP and were told he was a grass mouse, but looking at your pictures, he was very similar to the striped ones

The common names of some mammals have changed in the latest reference books, the single-striped mouse (Lemniscomys rosalia) is now called the single-striped grass mouse, and the striped mouse ([/i]Rhabdomys pumilio[i]) is now called the four-striped grass mouse. If the mouse you saw had four stripes along its back, then it was a four-striped grass mouse.

These two were seen "playing" in my herb garden today. Are they male & female or two males?



I have about 6 different pictures of them - this one is a bit cropped?

They can be sociable rodents too
