I wasn't sure where to post this, as I have no knowledge of reptiles.
But can someone please ID this big guy for me. Ran into him on the road near Klipdrift Dam, Potchefstroom

That is a nile monitor / Waterlikkewaan / Varanus niloticus, and by the looks of it a big one too!

I saw this lizard on the steps at Nkuhlu KNP in Feb 2009. Any idea what its called?

It is a male rainbow or five-lined skink (Trachylepis margaritifer). These are actually socialy lizzards so the female would not have been far away. The females and young males are black with yellow lines down their backs, and a blue tail.

Hi Jumbo, both are Flat lizards (Top: female, Buttom: Male), genus Platysaurus. The most distinctive charateristic of flat lizards is the spectacular colouring of the males. Juveniles and females tend to be drab shades of brown marked with a series of dorsal stripes. Breeding Males display striking colours of orange, turquoise greens and blues, reds and every shade between. They flash these bright colours at rivals and the females find these displays irresistible.

Thank you Spook …I did some searches and you are 100% correct …now I am trying to find out which one of the Platysaurus this is …
Now that I know it is a male and female, the interaction we witnessed makes a lot more sense….will post the series of shots next week…this involves spousal abuse, proof that men can not think as fast as women….and that this leads to the women always winning

Jumbo, i believe the Flat Lizard above is the Common Flat Lizard, Platysaurus intermedius, Subspecies: P.i. wilhelmi

can someone please help me identify this lizard. he came into my house when the door was open. ive seem him a few times by the pond behind my house. i live in south fl and i know its definetly not a native lizard because basically none of the lizards we see are.

im thinking its a water dragon but i definetly wouldnt put money on it.
when i was trying to catch him he was running on his hind legs kind of like a frilled dragon
