On my first visit to KNP, and I have no idea where, I remember being waved down by a Frenchman and directed to an oribi sighting. When we arrived we couldn't see anything but a klipspringer high above us, so my Q is:

Are oribi and klipspringer similar in appearance?

The klipspringer has a brown coat speckled with black, the underbelly not very conspicuous as it is a shade lighter brown. They also have large black 'tear marks' in the corner of their eyes. The klipspringer is found most commonly in rocky habitats, although I have seen them in scrub before as they wander long distances.

The oribi is solid brown with a conspicuous white under-belly. Their tails are black on the top and they have black spots under the ears. They are found in open grassland, especially with short grass.

The oribi is only found in the Pretoriaskop area in Kruger as far as I know :hmz:

Hope this helped :D

Another photo of the Klipspringer on top of the mountain close to the Lenong View Point at Marakele National Park. A Verreaux's Eagle was flying over the Klipspringer.

Did You Know ?
Klipspringers in Kaokoland in Namibie, can climb trees of a specific angle to get to the leaves. This makes them the only antilope that can climb trees.

Only male klipspringers have horns that are usually about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) long. However, according to some sources, female klipspringers in Eastern African populations also have horns.

 some interesting facts you sharing here Leeukos  I wonder if anyone has a pic of a Klipspringer in a tree

I read once about a specific tick that only attaches itself to a klipspringer.... do you have any confirmation or info on that?

Unfortunately I do not have any information about the tick. However, there are truly bizarre facts about animals which makes the wildlife so amazing.

Check the fact on the next post...
