We came from Letaba towards Mopani and just before the juction to the S50 we saw a dead snake on the road… and then suddenly in / from the bush two animals showed up. Looking at them I said…huhhh… that’s is not a BB Jackal … look at the tail with white end… and his body …different but “who” are they…? No time to read a book, no way to surf on the internet…only one solution and that is …photograph them …and later we will see what we have seen.
So…here the pics of them… beauties aren’t they?

-
First one I photographed just made himself visible in the bush
-
Image
-
Second one was on his way to the dead snake and played his game
-

-
What do you do if you see a dead snake and like to show you don’t like it…
-
Image
-
Next… you walk around.. asking yourself what can I do with it….

-
and
-
Image
-
After sniffeling he was losing interest and walked back to the bush
-
Image
-
Getting back to the other and both disappeared into the bush…leaving us with a big questionmark…
In Mopani someone who could know confirmed they are Side-Striped Jackal.
-
Last view on them..

Hi,

I saw this Side-striped Jackal near Talamati when we stayed there at the end of March.

Sorry about the image quality but they were very skittish and by the time I took the photo he moved.

A very nice sighting indeed.

Nice pics Aat and super sighting.

Mant, always lucky to see SSJ - not an animal commonly seen in Kruger.

Anybody want to venture a comment on the dead snake in Aat's photo ? It is quite sizeable and as such quite interesting . Could it be a black mamba ?

It looks like an Olive Grass Snake by the colour.

On my recent trip to Letaba I was fortunate to come across two Side Striped Jackal. This one was taken just before closing time on the S69. He stood still just long enough for me to capture his image.

Lovely sighting, ADW. I've seen them twice around Letaba, but pics are indeed often difficult to come by as they tend to be rather skittish.

Had the pleasure of seeing one on foot on a morning walk from Croc bridge in December last year

Thanks Odessy and Onewithnature. This trip was the first time I was able to get decent shots of these shy creatures. After this photo he ran off into the river bed never to be seen again!
