Crested Val, you are correct, for longterm stay the Chalets are expensive. Thats why I camp when in Kruger. But for a family holiday it is great value.

I'm not trying to "get at" SANparks, I am just telling the truth from our point of view!!

As overseas pensioners on a fixed income, we have to be very careful with our pennies these days.

As a lot of you know Dungie and I are very lucky to be able to come to SA for 6 months each year, but we cannot now afford to stay in my beloved Kruger, other than for the odd night or two.

Camping may be cheap, but the other units are not in my opinion.
I understand the reasons why (I think) so this is NOT a complaint, just a statement of the facts.

Of course occasionally there are 40% discounts during quiet periods, and if these are available when we are able to go, that is a different matter. Otherwise we now have to stay outside the park and go in on a daily basis.

The wildcard however is a wonderful godsend!!
Although the internationalcouples card is R2000+, if you go into the park as often as we do it is so well worth it!!

I hear you Aunty Val. I hear you. Ja wheelchair friendly accomm is not as cheap :( :hmz:
The only upside is safari tents! You save about R200 per night with Safari tents over bungaloes. :D

Kujo, nothing beats lying in a tent/caravan next to the fence with the Elephants and Liions around. No aircon's, so you can Hear.

I'm with Crested Val on this one. Camping is not really an option when travelling from overseas and saving a few Rand by taking accomodation with shared ablution/kitchen etc is not a particularly attractive proposition. So we book the chalets and pay the R2000 odd for a Wild Card for a few nights per year. I dont need 5 star luxury but to be brutally honest the accomodation is only just acceptable and most of the utensils supplied are well past their sell by date.

We discovered the safari tents at LS this year and although I loved them the heat was almost unbearable and my SO wasnt keen on using them again.

Yes I love the park and we save up all year for our annual trip to South Africa of which Kruger is always the highlight but for me the animals are worth the money, not the accomodation.

Camping is certainly the budget way to go, but as an overseas visitor it isn't a very attractive option for my family.

Either I buy equipment and then bring it along, or I buy in SA when I get there. (Or wait for Scipio to gear up  )I also have to take into account that Mrs. Stark likes having a bathroom and kitchen all to herself. This puts us into the mid-tier of accommodation prices, trending to the top-tier.

For what we want, staying in KNP ends up being roughly the same cost of staying in a decent 3-star hotel in the US per night. For vacation, that isn't bad. It would be better if the darn US dollar went farther.
