I was fortunate to see it in 2006 at 1360kub m/s and again last year at 900kub m/s. During this weekend it was at 2800kub m/s, more than double as in the last high recordings of 2006. I think it reached about 1800kub m/s at its highest in 2006.

Only show you that whatever the development in terms of dams and usage you have to respect nature to give us the typical 1in20 and 1in50 year floods that catches everybody by surprise? These floods in the past were way before the current discussions about global warming etc.

Good day all.
I have just seen some stunning photographs of the falls in flood on the SA 4X4 Community Forum.
Parts of the vantage points and walkways are under water.

Cheers and enjoy the day.
Bokvel.

Awsome stuff.

The Orange River reeched 3513kub m/s at Upington on Monday(08/02/2010) and is still on 3015kub m/s now. All according the department of water affairs.

Check out this site.

http://www.dwaf.gov.za/Hydrology/rtmain.aspx

Select Lower Orange River. Go to Orange River at Upington and then go and look at the data.

Thanks LL---That is an insane stat . I must try dig up how much the 95(?) flood was.

So if one pictures an imaginary cube of 1 metre X 1 metre X 1 metre and multiplies it by 3500 times.......

Then imagine that amount blitzing past every single second and it looks like those shots.

Sorry for the Arb question - but any idea as to how long the water levels at Augrabies might stay like this? SO and I are comtemplating driving up to Augrabies from CT to check out the falls - Either last weekend of Feb or the first weekend of March Will we be too late to catch the spectacular!

Hey Munchkin -- That link posted by LaaeveldLeeu has the current volumes.I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but it has definitely dropped off quite a bit already. Its down to 900 odd cumecs from around 3300cumecs.... BUT..... dont let that fool you into thinking it wont be impressive anyway .The flow is controlled from Gariep dam and if there is ANY more rain anywhere in those catchment areas (and I mean that literally!)that level could jump again really quickly. For me any excuse to get up there and if you have the time then go anyway I reckon!

Hi Munchkin
I called Augrabies Falls today and they confirmed what AjayB has just said
No longer the "Bridal Falls", only the main falls. I was also hoping that it would still be in flood as we are going up to on 25th and thought that a night on 24th would be a great idea. May still go a day before

I am"entertaining" visitors from the USA and the UK on a trip to the Kgalagadi. As part of this they wanted to see the Augrabies Falls. No problem, it is only a 250km add-on.

We get to the entrance gate, and were received with typical Northern Cape friendliness and hospitality. A little note stapled to the entrance permit informs visitors only 3 of the 6 lookouts are available, and no reductions/refunds will be made because of this. We all understand the floods were SERIOUS, no problem.

Once there we realise NO attempt has been made to repair the damage. The flood damage was caused months ago, and repairs should have been under way by now.

This is DISGUSTING.

The viewing platforms are by no means a "must have" and since there are still 3 available, I'm sure Parks will first attend to other issues that crept up after the floods - and rightly so. Repair actions like that needs to be funded and contracted - from a budged that most probably get reviewed and allocated annually. If there was no funds available, it will wait until the next financial year...nothing DISGUSTING about that.
